Agarwood is the name of a modified part of the wood of a tree of the Aquilaria. Aquilaria includes17 types and are scattered in Asian countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, China, Philippines, Malaysia.

When the Aquilaria tree is affected by external factors that lead to injury, the tree will secrete resin around the injured part. The purpose is to heal the wound and over time the resin essential oil penetrates the wood to create agarwood.

The History of Vietnamese Oud – تاريخ العود الفيتنامي

Vietnamese agarwood originates from an ancient legend: Goddess Thien Y A Na, a beautiful deity of the Cham people – an ethnic minority in Vietnam (currently worshiped at Cham towers in the Central region), she often discovers the forests in Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa. The scent of the goddess spreads and blends into the agarwood tree, from which the agarwood still lingers, “the scent of the goddess” that is mixed from the scent of the mountains, forests and the gods.

Jungle men often tell each other that agarwood is the child of the goddess. Agarwood cannot be found with perseverance like other trees in the forest, but it must have the love of the goddess to find the real agarwood.

Agarwood is also an item associated with Buddhism in Vietnam because it combines all three characteristics of Buddhist spirituality: it is difficult to find, purity and is praised by people. The words “CAUSES-CONDITIONS-EFFECTS” transmitted in Buddhism are also associated with the process of finding agarwood. Extraction Vietnamese Agarwood – كيفية استخراج العود الفيتنامي؟

A mature agarwood tree has an average height of 20 m, a diameter of 30-40 cm, and a canopy width of 8-10 m. After 7-10 years, many holes appear on the tree trunk, meaning there is natural agarwood. The holes are formed due to attack by borers, forcing the tree to secrete protective essential oils, thereby creating agarwood (wood soaked in essential oils).

For trees without holes, farmers will drill and punch holes in the tree trunk and then apply oil to stimulate the tree to produce oil and agarwood (artificial agarwood on natural trees). After 2 to 5 years, the drilled trees can be harvested.

Agarwood is crafted, displayed in the home, and used to make jewelry and fine arts. Or burn to create the fragrance emitted from agarwood oil. Agarwood essential oil is effective in improving arthritis, digestive diseases, reducing asthma and providing dental care…

Once the tree has formed agarwood, the farmer will prune the branches, saw the trunk into pieces and carve the log to find the agarwood inside. When cutting the log into small pieces of wood, if black agarwood appears, the worker will stop. Then use a chisel to trim the white wood parts, leaving the black wood part. Agarwood trimmers are usually middle-aged, experienced, persistent and skillful.

When all the black Oud is taken, the wood chips and pruned remains of the Aquilaria tree will be dried in the sun to cook the essential oil, or put into a big blender to make powder to make incense.
